High levels of LDL Cholesterol, or ‘bad’ cholesterol, may lead to heart disease and stroke; therefore, it is important to maintain your cholesterol levels. One way to maintain low levels of LDL cholesterol and high levels of HDL, or good cholesterol levels, is by following a low cholesterol diet. (Taking a cholesterol lowering treatment like Lipitor will also help.)
It’s important to remember that a low cholesterol diet, is also a low fat diet, and is not hard to follow. In fact, a low cholesterol diet gives you a variety of foods to choose from.
A low cholesterol diet includes the following guidelines:
• Fruits and vegetables – Fruits and vegetables are very important to include in a low cholesterol diet because it is rich in minerals and vitamins and low in calories and fat. An additional benefit is that these foods will not raise your cholesterol levels.
• Fats and oils – You should try to lower your consumption of certain fats such as saturated fats. These fats could raise your cholesterol levels and contribute to a higher risk for heart disease. You should also avoid foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, such as margarine and shortening, because they contain a form of saturated fats known as trans fats. Trans fats raise blood cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol), just like saturated fats, and can also help with the formation of waxy, cholesterol plaques on your arteries. Alternatively, you should use olive oils and canola oils, which are particularly high in vegetable oil and can help lower your cholesterol and keep your heart healthy.
• Bread and grains – White flour or a high diet in carbohydrates can raise cholesterol levels and increase your risk for heart disease, especially for diabetics. Therefore, choose whole grains food instead.
• Dairy and meats – Chose low fat or skim dairy products instead of regular, full-fat ones, to reduce risk of heart disease. Likewise, when cooking with meat, you should also choose lean meats, such as chicken, fish or turkey.

any people suffer from very severe forms of acne that cannot be treated with conventional medications and creams. Using the wrong products to treat severe acne may cause irritation, infections and scaring. In these cases, it is recommended to consult your dermatologist about a variety of prescription medications available to clear severe acne. There are 2 types of methods for treating severe acne:
• Topical medications – This type of medication is applied to the skin and is prescribed for mild to severe acne. Topical retinoids (like Retin-A), for instance, are a derivative of vitamin A and work to unclog pores and prevent whiteheads and blackheads from forming.
• Systemic therapy – This works internally and treats severe acne and may also be used for moderate cases. Oral antibiotics work to reduce the P.acnes, a contributing factor in acne, which decreases inflammation. Antibiotics are generally prescribed for 6 months or less and usually begin with a higher dosage.
It is important to note that in order to achieve long term control and resolution, dermatologists may combine treatments. The following are other treatments that are used to clear severe acne:
Interlesional Corticosteroid injection – To treat severely inflamed cysts and prevent scarring, dermatologist may inject cysts with a much-diluted corticosteroid. This procedure lessens the inflammation and promotes healing over a period of 3 to 5 days.
Isotretinoin (Accutane) – This oral retinoid treatment is potent and reserved to treat very severe cystic acne that has been resistant to other medications.
Oral contraceptives – Oral contraceptives (like Yasmin) suppress the overactive sebaceous glands and can be used as a long-term acne treatment because it has shown to be very effective in clearing acne among women.
Topical Antimicrobials – This medication inhibit the P.acnes and are used to treat mild to moderately severe inflamed acne. Topical Antimicrobial treatments may be used alone or combined with other medications.

Natural herbs and botanicals are used in almost every product we use today, even skin care products. Skin care products have been trying to treat acne with different means, in order to eliminate this ongoing problem among adolescence and adults. One of the methods is using herbal supplements.
Before trying herbal treatments it is important to consult with your dermatologist about the herbs and their side effects. You can use herbal supplements in conjunction with other prescription medications or creams, including Differin or Retin-A.
There are several herbal products that help fight acne:
• Calendula – Also known as pot marigold, it is most commonly used in home gardens and nurseries. The flowers of the Calendula plant are used to compliment many creams and lotions dealing with acne.
• Green Tea – This herb is taken from the green tea leaf and has many benefits including dealing with acne.
• Tea Tree Oil – This Australian plant is believed to be the most effective botanical acne treatment. The active ingredient in the tea tree oil is found naturally in the oil, and has been proven to fight acne by slowing the acne causing bacteria or P.acnes.
• Aloe Vera – This is one of the most popular botanical treatments which helps with shedding dead skin while stimulating the growth of new skin. Aloe vera also reduces inflammation and irritation by calming and soothing the skin.
Some vitamin and mineral supplements are also effective in fighting acne:
• Vitamin A & B – Both of these vitamins are most commonly found in creams, gels, and lotions because of its effectiveness for controlling inflammation.
• Zinc – Zinc supplements can be taken in topical and oral forms, and are effective in reducing inflammation and can prevent cases of acne by opening up the pores.
• Vitamin C – A combination of vitamin C and bioflavanoids have a direct effect on inflammation.
• Vitamin E – Vitamin E doesn’t directly affect acne; instead it helps the body absorb the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to naturally treat acne.

Clear skin is something we all dream about. It can be so hard to achieve. Most of us are pretty lazy when it comes to skincare, but by making a few changes and building a few simple steps into your daily routine, you can keep your skin looking and feeling fresh.

• Keep it clean – Wash your face every morning and night. Without exception. Every day, the dirt and grime that builds up on our faces causes bacteria to spread, which can cause spots or irritated skin. By washing your face twice a day you break down the bacteria and keep your skin healthy, helping to cure acne. Washing at night can be hard, especially if you are tired before you go to bed, but make that extra effort and it will pay off.

• Drink water – Everyone says it. Drink drink drink. But how much do you actually drink every day? Chances are, it’s not enough. You should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. It will keep your body healthy, and will make a huge difference to your skin.

• Use the right products – It’s easy to be sucked into the advertising campaigns of the big brand names. But often, these products are all show and no substance. Make sure you use a face wash with salicylic acid in, which kills bacteria helping to fight acne. The right wrinkle cream is also important, so chose one that targets the collagen in your skin, such as Knockout Wrinkles.

• Pigmentation – Spots aren’t the only blemish that we suffer. Too much time in the sun causes skin pigmentation. Make sure you wear sun screen every day, not just in the summer. Try and find a moisturizer that contains sun block, which will make wearing it easier. If you already have skin pigmentation, try using products such as White Lily, which reduces the skin pigmentation naturally.

As you can see, just a little extra effort each day can make a huge difference to the health of your skin.

While we normally think of acne as an unfortunate condition that affects us in our teen years, the truth is that many adults suffer from acne at different stages of life. Whether it’s during pregnancy, your regular monthly cycle, or due to medication like birth control, hormonal fluctuations can cause adult acne in many women. So let’s get to the bottom of what does and does not help prevent or treat acne.

1. “Poor hygiene causes acne.”
While it may not look pretty, acne has nothing to do with cleanliness. Even black heads, which may look like dirt in your pores, is actually melanin.

2. “Eating greasy foods causes acne.”
While some people swear that eating pizza causes them to break out, the truth is that there is no known connection between diet and acne. That being said, eating a healthy diet can only promote your general health, skin included.

3. “Acne is only cosmetic.”
Acne is not considered dangerous to your health, but it can not only leave scars, but can affect self esteem and self image. So, don’t just sit around feeling self conscious, go to the doctor and find out what you can do to get clear skin.

4. “There is nothing you can do to treat acne.”
This could not be further from the truth. Acne medication, such as Accutane or Retin-A, are available with a prescription, as well as many over the counter acne skin care products. Give them a try.

5. “Washing your face multiple times a day will clear up your acne.”
False. Acne is not caused by dirt. Washing your face over and over again can actually irritate the pores and clog them even more. This strips your face of its natural oils causing your body to create more and more oil to compensate.

6. “The sun can help get rid of acne.”

Are you getting frustrated with what you see in the mirror? Do you wish everyday that you had clear skin? Maybe you have tried traditional acne medication to no avail, so why not try some all natural home remedies.

1. One of the most popular home remedies for reducing swelling and redness is putting toothpaste on any pimples before you go to bed. Use the paste, not gel.

2. Get rid of those fancy, expensive facial scrubs, try washing your face twice a day with warm salty water. This should reduce oil without irritating your sensitive skin.

3. This remedy requires a bit more patience: mix lemon juice with an equal amount of rose water. Apply to your face for about 30 minutes, and then rinse with water. Do this daily for about 2 weeks and see what a difference it can make.

4. Try applying fresh mint juice to your face nightly. This should help reduce pimples and can even help treat eczema and other skin conditions as well.

5. If you are looking for a soothing home remedy, mix nutmeg with milk. Apply to your face, and then rinse with water. Pat dry.

6. Make sure that you are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Your body, and skin included, needs all the nutrients, vitamins, and anti-oxidants it can get.

7. Supplements like B5 and zinc, can help promote clear skin and fight acne.

8. To get clear skin, try an all natural mask. Mix corn flour and egg whites. Apply to your face and let set for 30 minutes. After half an hour wet your hands with warm water and massage the mixture into your skin. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry. Using this mask regularly should give you clear, smooth skin.

If none of these home remedies work, you can always see your doctor about how to best treat acne through medication. There are lots of acne skin care products out there including Retin-A or Accutane which are known to be very effective.

Unless there’s been an outbreak in your area, then a surgical mask and gloves are unnecessary. You don’t want to walk around town paranoid that everyone around you has swine influenza—if someone’s got swine flu, they won’t be out and about, you can be sure of that.

So what can you do on a day-to-day basis to protect yourself and your family from getting this nasty H1N1 virus?

1. Wash your hands. The best flu protection is cleanliness. Wash your hands before you eat, after picking your kids up from school or a birthday party (anywhere where there are lots of kids), after riding on public transportation, after going bowling, or any other time when you come in contact with other people directly or indirectly (as in the case with the bowling alley). Encourage your kids to wash their hands frequently throughout the day too, and pack some antibacterial wipes or gel in their lunches to remind them to wash up.
2. Avoid touching your face. You’re more likely to contract swine flu if the contact reaches your eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.
3. Boost your immune system. You’ll have a better chance to preventing swine flu and overcoming the virus if you do get it if you’re healthy. Eat nutritiously, exercise, and drink plenty of water.
4. If you are pregnant, have an infant or young child, or are an elderly person, you may want to take extra precautions in avoiding large crowds, contact with sick people, or hospitals, especially if there’s been an outbreak in your area.
5. Get treatment. If you experience any H1N1 symptoms, begin treatment immediately. Antiviral flu medicines like Tamiflu work best if they’re taken early. You may want to buy Tamiflu online now, just to have it in case of an emergency.

Who knows where you’ll be when a bout of diarrhea strikes? Or if your twice yearly migraine decides to make an appearance? Or if your skin breaks out with an Amazonian case of acne? A first aid kit topped off with extra medications and creams is a good idea if you want to play it safe during your adventure.

Because you generally need a prescription for antibiotics, and because doctors generally won’t write you one unless you’ve got specific reason, people often overlook antibiotics on their “to bring” medications list. But packing along some antibiotics is probably one of the smartest things you can bring along with you.

For example, diarrhea is generally due to a bad reaction to food, dehydration, or some minor infection that will go away on its own. Usually one or two doses of Imodium is enough to get your digestive system back to regular. But sometimes it’s not enough and you’ll want to take something like Cipro (a good general antibiotic) to cover your bases to eliminate any other bacterial infection. The last thing you want on your vacation is to be running back and forth to the bathroom (or the hole in the ground at the end of camp) all through the night. And a dose of Cipro will usually do the trick.

You can buy Cipro online without a prescription just to hold on to as backup. If your regular medications don’t work for aches and pains, stomach ache, food poisoning, or a bad cut or scrape, then you’ll know that you’ve got your emergency Cipro on hand for safe and effective bacterial treatment.

The best thing about antibiotics like Cipro is that if you take it in error, or just take it to be on the safe side but aren’t 100% sure that you need it, you’re highly unlikely to experience any negative side effects.

So before your next journey to Southeast Asia or African safari trip, stock up on a safe antibiotic that you’ll be able to turn to when there are no doctors around for miles.

You don’t need to run a marathon everyday, but you do need to get off your butt and do SOME exercise. Yes, everyday. Even if it’s just a brisk walk around the block or hiking up the stairs to your fifth floor apartment a few times a day. Lazy people get fat, and more importantly, get depressed and lose all motivation to improve their lifestyle. Avoid a funk, don’t get in a rut, and don’t slack off. The rewards of an active life are great!

Here’s how you know you’re getting by too easily:

1. You talk on the phone while you’re on the treadmill. Come on—are you really going to try and convince us that you’re doing anything more than 3 mph if you’re able to keep up a steady conversation during your entire workout?
2. You only wash your workout clothes once a week. If you’re not working up a sweat and stinking up your gym clothes at least three times a week, then you’re not really working out. You should need a new set of clothes for each new workout.
3. You’ve been doing the same workout for more than a few months and haven’t raised the intensity. Well good for you for working out, but if you’re still working out at the intensity from last year’s workout, then you’re probably not working out enough in the here and now. At a certain point, our bodies get used to the workout that’s set out for them and no longer exists as a challenge. Step it up a notch whenever you find your workout getting too easy and you’ll find that your workout is more effective.
4. You’re not losing weight and you’re always exhausted. Lazy people are generally tired people and are less likely to lose weight. If you feel energy-less throughout your day, it’s probably because you’re not moving around nearly enough.
