child-obesityChildhood obesity is plaguing the new generation; as many as 1 in 6 kids will be obese today. Maybe this is due to our busy schedules, the over-availability of cheap processed foods, and less freedom for children to spend time outside exercising, but whatever the myriad of factors that can or may lead to this major health concern. The fact is that childhood obesity puts our children at risk of developing diabetes, depression, certain forms of cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
As with adults, children need to exercise regularly and eat healthy food to stay in shape.
How can you talk to your children about their weight?
1. Be positive and supportive. Remember that children who are overweight get just as self conscious as adults. They may not want to talk to you about their weight specifically. Instead discuss a family fitness plan. Get the whole household involved. Never make your child feel bad about who they are or how they look; focus on how to improve the health of your family as a unit, and let your children become active participants in creating the guidelines for how to achieve your new goal.
2. Clean out the whole kitchen. Remember that this is a project for the whole family. If you are going to ask your kids to give up their favorite treats, you will have to give up yours as well. Discuss with your children which foods are nutrient rich, and which are just fat and calories. With your kids, create a family diet plan based on healthy, energizing foods, and allow for some small treats as well. Avoid diet pills, even all natural ones like Acai Plus.
3. Limit computer and TV time; encourage outdoor play. Again, do not make absolute statements. Get your kids to help you come up with a reasonable amount of time that they will be allowed to use the TV/computer.
4. Keep it real. Don’t focus on body image, but instead on positive goals of health, fitness, and feeling good.
5. Family time should be active. Go bike riding, hiking, boating, be creative!
